Yeah, Like We Matter…

I love the United States. But, I also love Puerto Rico. At times I feel that my heart cannot love both at the same time, or with the same intensity. Loving the US sometimes makes me hate my homeland. More often than not, loving my native island entails for me to hate the mainland. It’s a land of contradictions. What can I say?

Tonight while reading the Nuevo Dia newspaper, one of the main newspapers at home, I couldn’t stop myself from laughing, and then crying (from real disappointment) a very small tear from my right eye. CHELSEA CLINTON IS IN PUERTO RICO!!! Right…like I would have forgotten about the democratic primaries. All of a sudden, they care about their loyal US citizens of the south of the border – the other south of the border, way south.

Hold on to your jaw, it might drop to the floor and break. Puerto Rico participates in US primaries. No, I am not kidding. We have participated since we gained US citizenship in 1917 through the Jones Act. Still holding on to your jaw? No, we do not vote during the real election; you know, the one that actually matters. And, on top of all that, we have 63 delegates!! Sixty three! Sesenta y tres! That is more than many MANY US states. No surprise that all of a sudden democrat candidates are flying in to Puerto Rico to campaign, saying “jolas” and smooching the elderly.

I have no problem with US candidates, or their families, visiting the island. The issue lies in the US Congress, its senators, representatives and politicians in general who simulate a false interest in the opinions of our people. They don’t care what we have to say, they never have. Fact of the matter is, as soon as whoever gets their votes they will forget about us for another 4 years.

What I found absolutely hilarious though was that the article published in El Nuevo Dia came from the Associated Press. No no no no. Were they serious? Now Puerto Rican press does not even cover local news? This is preposterous!
